Weekend inspiration: Coronado Island

San Diego has become our West Coast home away from home. It's where we come to relax and rest by the sea. Recently we were able to spend a good amount of time on the island of Coronado, just outside of downtown San Diego.

Coronado Island has a hip, yet warm and friendly small-town vibe and as you walk around the downtown area, you feel as though you've stepped back into the 1950s.

If you find yourself in the area for a few days, here are some of our favorite things to do.

Friday night

If you're looking to stay in an iconic spot, look no further than Hotel Del Coronado. Known as San Diego's best full-service beachfront hotel, this hotel has been around for over 130 years.

Their new beach village is right on the ocean, fully updated and away from the heavy crowds that occupy the main hotel areas.

After checking in, walk down the street to LeRoy's Kitchen and Lounge for dinner. They have a great happy hour deal from 3:00-6:00 p.m. with refreshing specialty cocktails. Their farm-to-table approach to food keeps their ingredients local and sustainable, and their deviled eggs with chutney are a must.

As you walk back toward the hotel, stop in the cute shops and boutiques up and down Orange Avenue.

Saturday

There's nothing better than getting up in the morning and enjoying the ocean breeze. Head north on the ocean sidewalk towards Coronado's famous dog beach. A frolicking herd of dogs are the best remedy for anything ailing you.

For breakfast, walk up Orange Avenue and stop by Clayton's Coffee Shop for their incredible acai bowls. Try to get there when they open because a line tends to form on the weekend.

One of our favorite Montague family past-times is shell hunting and the shelling at Silver Strand State Beach on Coronado is legendary. It was even voted one of the top 10 shelling beaches in the country according to Travel & Leisure magazine. Grab a windbreaker (it can get pretty windy out there), a canvas bag to keep your treasures and go hunting. We've found stunning shells on this beach including cockles, limpets, scallops and sand dollars.

After you've worked up an appetite, make your way up the beach to the best grass-fed burger bar you'll ever find — Burger Lounge — a Southern California staple.

Relax after lunch by swimming in the pool at Hotel Del Coronado or in the ocean. If you don't feel like getting into a swimsuit after a burger (we get it) go to Coronado's tide pools to check out Southern California's marine life. These tide pools are visible during low tide in front of the hotel.

For dinner, we recommend Lobster West Coronado along Orange Avenue. We believe their fresh lobster rivals the East Coast's. After dinner, check out Coronado's Summer Concert Series at Spreckles Park to see if anyone is playing.

Sunday

Looking for a different take on breakfast? Night and Day Café offers some yummy Mexican breakfast options including stellar huevos rancheros.

If you're up for some sea adventures, we highly recommend heading over to Seaforth Boat Rentals to hire a boat or yacht tour around the island. If you've never paddle boarded, give SUP Coronado a call and book a time to take a class and a tour on one of their paddleboards. The calm waters between the island and the mainland often make for perfect paddle boarding conditions.

For lunch, stop by Coronado Brewing Company for wood-fired pizza and a barrel-aged German chocolate cake brew for dessert.

After lunch, jump on a ferry over to the Gaslamp Quarter on the mainland. Make sure to keep your phone out for awesome views of the city on your way over.

In the Gaslamp Quarter, stop by Horton Plaza Park to check out our art mural. One side is a dragonfly flock you can appear to be "letting go" of up the wall. On the other side you can stand under an upside-down San Diego cityscape. If you put your hands up towards some of taller buildings and then flip the picture, it looks like you're doing a handstand on the tallest buildings in San Diego.

From there, grab an Uber over to the San Diego Seaport for cute touristy shops and stellar guacamole at Puesto in the Headquarters area. Kelsey's movable sea creature winged mural is usually stationed in the adjoining courtyard, so keep your eyes out for it.

For dinner, we think the two best places in town are Ironside in Little Italy or Seersucker restaurant in the Gaslamp. You can't go to Ironside without getting their bread appetizer, but if you're staying away from carbs, Seersucker has great options, including an amazing steak.

As you ferry back to Coronado Island, grab a few last photos of San Diego — our favorite California city by the sea.

A message from Scott Kirby, United’s new CEO

Hello. I'm Scott Kirby, the new CEO of United Airlines. I'm a proud Air Force Academy graduate and have spent my entire career in and around aviation, including the last four years as President of United.

While I had planned for my first communication with you to be about the meaningful investments we were making to the travel experience and our continued growth across the U.S. and expansion to exciting new destinations around the world, today, the situation rendered to us by the COVID-19 pandemic leads me to a different type of message.

First, I graciously and humbly thank you for your business. Now, more than ever, our customers' loyalty is so deeply appreciated by every member of the United family.

As essential workers, the men and women of our airline have been hard at work over the past two months to transport vital medical supplies and critical goods to places that need them most, to provide free travel to healthcare professionals and to help thousands of individuals repatriate to their home countries.

Safety has always been our top priority, and right now in the midst of an unprecedented crisis, it's our singular customer focus. We recognize that COVID-19 has brought cleanliness and hygiene standards to the front of your mind when making travel decisions. We're not leaving a single stone unturned in our pursuit to protect our customers and employees.

We are installing plexiglass in lobby and gate areas, we're using the same equipment used to clean hospitals to disinfect the interiors of our aircraft, all crew and customers on board are required to wear face mask coverings and we're taking the temperature of our employees before they start work.

But at United, we're not stopping there. We're teaming up with experts from Clorox and the Cleveland Clinic to set a new standard for cleanliness and healthy flying that we are calling United CleanPlus℠.

Clorox is working closely with us to improve how we disinfect common surfaces and provide our customers with amenities that support a healthy and safe environment.

Physicians and scientists at the Cleveland Clinic, will advise us on new technologies and approaches, assist in training development and create a rigorous quality assurance program. And, as scientists learn more about how to fight COVID-19, Cleveland Clinic experts will help us use those discoveries to quickly implement new ways to keep our customers safe.

While we may not know when this pandemic will subside, what we do know is that travel is so deeply woven into the fabric of our global culture. We all desire to visit family, dance at a friend's wedding, hug parents…and see the wonders of this beautiful world. No matter how sharp the picture quality – or how strong the WiFi signal – there's simply no substitute for being there – in person – to collaborate, celebrate, explore. We are confident that travel will return. And when it does, United Airlines will be ready to serve you again in the friendly skies.
